LPC 500 Liquid Particle Counter
The LPC 500™ Liquid Particle Counter is a single particle optical sizing (SPOS) system designed to count and size particles individually with high resolution. When used for in-service oil samples, only 4 mL of 10x diluted samples are typically needed, offering reproducible results between high- and low-viscosity samples, while also minimizing washout requirements and solvent waste. The LPC 500:
Part Number N0810904
The LPC 500 Liquid Particle Counter consists of three components – an optical sensor, a multi-channel pulse analyzer (MPA), and a software controller – and is available in two configurations:
Depth | 47.0 cm |
---|---|
Height | 19.0 cm |
Weight | 8.5 kg |
Width | 37.0 cm |
Particle counting is becoming a more routine tool for lubricant condition monitoring and maintenance programs to better identify particles of certain sizes and concentrations that can contribute to machine failure. In-service oils and other lubricants are monitored for particle size similarly to how they are monitored for elemental concentration. An increase in the ISO code (ISO 4406) for particle count or concentration of key wear metals indicates when maintenance is required.
By adding the LPC 500™ liquid particle counter in-line with the Avio® 550 Max ICP-OES Oils system, lubricant samples can be analyzed for both wear metals and particles all in one run with results repeatably within one ISO code for the >4, >6 µm sizes for transmission and gear oil. Throughput of 45 seconds on average per sample with less than 1 mL is achieved for both ICP as well as particle counting and sizing, all with the smallest automated particle counting system in the lubricants testing industry.

For in-service oil testing labs challenged with fast turnaround and analytical accuracy, while also controlling operating costs, the wait is over. The new LPC 500™ liquid particle counter coupled to the Avio® 500 ICP-OES Oils system enables the same diluted sample to be analyzed for both elements and particle count/size in a single run – a game changer in laboratory workflow that considerably improves operating costs.
Read this case study to learn how a Caterpillar dealer, with 39 years of experience in the lubricants industry, improved test result accuracy and increased turn-around time by introducing a new high-performance liquid particle counter - the PerkinElmer LPC 500™ - to combine the power of particle count technology with elemental analysis, all in a single run. The game-changing LPC 500 provides sample throughput of approximately 45 seconds per sample with less than 1 mL of sample used for diluted sample preparation, freeing up technicians to perform other tasks and eliminating any human inconsistency in processing samples manually.
In-service oil and lubricant testing labs like yours are all faced with the same challenges – increasing throughput, improving accuracy, and controlling operating costs. What if there was a way to reach your goals while optimizing the laboratory’s workflow? Now there is. The new LPC 500™ liquid particle counter coupled with the proven Avio® 500 ICP-OES Oils system brings together two critical analyses – particle counting/sizing and wear metals – delivering the following benefits for your lab:
PerkinElmer’s LPC 500 Liquid Particle Counter is a single particle optical sizing system designed to count and size particles individually with high resolution. When used for in-service oil samples, only 3 to 4 mL of 10x diluted samples are typically needed, offering reproducible results between high- and low-viscosity samples, while minimizing washout requirements and solvent waste.
Plus, when coupled with an Avio 500 ICP-OES Oils system, the integrated solution provides particle count and elemental analysis in one run with sample throughput at an average of 45 seconds per sample, using less Than 1 mL of lubricant per analysis.
